Come build a better world with us

We have a vision of making our tiny world a better place, but what does it mean exactly for you? And how does it benefit the community?

Of course our purpose is to create footwear made for Ultimate that you’ll enjoy wearing every time you step on a field (and I heard that’s quite often), and even there we started to make things differently, like when we made our cleats better then  unisex.

Why are our cleats better than unisex?

Generally in the footwear industry, women cleats are just mens cleats made narrower (and pinker) because statistically women tend to have thinner feet than men.

As I was looking for a way to create a gender neutral pair of cleats, I came with the  idea of including 2 pairs of insoles – a thinner and a thicker one – to adapt to wider and thinner feet.

This innovation received a lot of positive feedback from players whose feet didn’t fit the statistics and that could finally find a good fit outside of the industry standards.

But the product is not the only thing you care about right?

“What if you could have a bigger impact by choosing TOKAY?”

When it comes to gender there is no difference to be made.

These words should not be a statement, they should be an obvious reality. Unfortunately, the sports community is also impacted by our patriarchal society.

There is still a lot of work to be done before we reach gender equity. At TOKAY we have set a few rules that help us make sure we have an equal representation and benefits:

  • Have more women than men represented in our communications: Instagram, emails, website and prints.
  • When giving away cleats – for raffles, reviews, prizes or contests – always make sure a player of both genders receives a pair
  • Maintain the gender balance with our female ambassadors

We also work in that sense with our partners and help high projects such as the European Ultimate Gender Equity Manual.

NO ADS

We’re not doing ads anymore outside of the Ultimate community. Which means that most of our marketing budget goes to Ultimate Frisbee organizations, projects or players.

I don’t know what you think about online ads, but I personally don’t like them. And thinking that someone paid to waste your time…

When I started TOKAY and tried to set up ads, I was recommended to spend up to ⅓ of my revenues on ads (⅓ of your money!). I didn’t really get the point of that until the pandemic hit and I stopped the project. When life came back, I realized I didn’t need to do ads because players just enjoyed the product so much they talked about it to their teammates, and that’s how we grew in 2021.

Our booth at Us Nationals 2022

Now that TOKAY has a real marketing budget, most of it goes to the Ultimate Frisbee community. So when you buy TOKAY, a significant part of your purchase goes to an organization or a project that will help someone play somewhere.

No fast fashion

Have you realized this year how fast the Halloween decorations were changed for Christmas stuff? Our product line lasts for years.

The fashion industry doesn’t have just a winter and summer season anymore but loads of events throughout the year in order to boost their marketing and rush us to buy more and more.

At TOKAY we don’t want to push anyone to overconsume. Our products line that last for years, and we do sales only when there’s a good reason, like the  Discontinued JET right now.

We don’t do Black Friday, because although it looks like Black Friday is full of good deals, those discounts have to be compensated elsewhere. It means that if you buy a product outside of the sales season you’ll be paying for the discount someone else will get later. At TOKAY you get the right price all year long.

Looking for a good deal? We have a group offer, that lets you benefit of the savings we make on logistics for bulk orders.

Chanting our chant

Our community has its own vibes, it’s fun and cheerful, but it’s also committed to creating a better world. As a brand, we love to be part of that.

This year facing the terrible invasion of Ukraine by Russia, we created the “STOP WAR” for our Beach Socks and gave 100% of the revenues generated to “Médecins sans Frontière”, a french Association that helps refugees from the war.

Thanks to you, we could give back 835€

We have also created the “Projects we love” section to highlight projects that we think help build a better world.

Sharing the Spirit

The very thing that makes our sport and our community unique is Spirit of the Game. Personally, being my own referee helped me understand how much I am responsible for my actions, and had an impact on my entire life. But how can it influence a business?

Self-referring helps us value honesty, a positive attitude and clear communication. At TOKAY we strive to apply these values to our customer service in order to make your experience with us as enjoyable as possible.

We’re a startup and make mistakes, we’ve had defective products and lost parcels, but we’re able to understand when we make a mistake, understand when this is our fault and find a fair resolution. If we’ve made mistakes, please let us know.

no black friday

We  have decided we won’t be participating to black Friday anymore. This event was created to liquidate the stocks of low quality, or fast fashion products, encouraging over consumption. This is not our philosophy.  At TOKAY we rather like to maintain the right price all year long for all of our clients.

We encourage everyone to only use what they need.

If you are looking for a light, comfortable, grippy cleat to accompany you at your trainings and games all year long, then you can rely on our TOKAY Flight:

Forget you're wearing cleats with TOKAY Flight

Only using what you need is an environmental commitment. At TOKAY we have made the choice to encourage this by proposing permanent products to our catalog instead of collections that would participate into the fast fashion and increase unnecessary purchases.

Looking for a discount?

Group orders allow us to make significant cuts into our logistics costs, that we are happy to share with our clients. This deal is available all year long on:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Instead of looking for the “best” deals, after sending this email I will close my computer and go for a long time waited family weekend.
Hope you have the opportunity to do the same and celebrate what really matters.

Con10ent: The All Black Tour

More than a Tour, Con10ent is a masterplan, imagined by Shanye Crawford, Founder and CEO of Disc Diversity, to build support and create a safe space for black players into our community.

A radical change

“Rather than fixing a broken system, in a community that’s already like none other, let’s be radical”

Shanye Crawford

To make our sport more inclusive, Con10ent pursues 2 goals:

“Affording current Black players every imaginable support White players have had in order to raise up the absent Black leaders the ultimate community needs.” A tour is a unique opportunity to raise the future leaders in our sport by creating visibility and role models. As Crawford says “I believe that by uplifting black players in this way we will inspire the absent leaders that the ultimate community requires but that black players don’t have to be”.

“Bringing Black youth into an unprecedented support system… at a time like this! Let’s offer ourselves as a refuge in which Black children and Black parents can thrive!” to shortly expand our community in a meaningful and lasting way. Black parents don’t feel safe to bring their kids in an all white environment as they’re not sure how well they’ll be welcomed. We need to actively show them the Ultimate community is a safe place.

The Tour

To accomplish this meaningful task, here is what Con10ent has set up for all of us.

The tour will take place in fall 2021 and mark 3 stops in Philadelphia, the Bay area and Seattle. Each stop will see a game between 2 teams composed of a core of 5 Black women’s players and 5 Black men’s , picking up an additional 20 local players — 10 youth and 10 adults — in each host location. Each team will be coached by some incredible pairs of coaches:

  • Amel Awadelkarim and Khalif El-Salaam
  • Opi Payne and Christian Boxley
  • Jasmine Childress and Yusuf Abdullah
  • Chupzi Lema and Trent Dillon
  • Shanye Crawford and Jesse Bolton

Community projects

Each stop will be organizing a 6 week paid youth summer program in every host cities organised around a community project of their choosing targeting 5 topics:

  • Education
  • Play
  • Mental Health
  • Politics
  • Music & Art

The projects will be presented before each game.

How to support the tour

Like similar showcase tours in the past, Con10enT is attempting to crowdfund the resources necessary to make the event possible, setting an initial goal of raising $50,000 from the community.

The project has already crowdfunded $37,664.08 thanks to their sponsors, donations and the jersey bid war.

The money raised will help fund the following tour components:

  1. Core
    1. Transportation: airfare & local
    2. Per diem
    3. Lodging & meals
  2. City
    1. Media team & promotion: traveling + remote crews
    2. Venue(s)

Good Shipping News

With an always growing number of orders in North America, we decided last year to open a warehouse in the USA. Which allowed us 2 cool upgrades: Less CO2 emissions, by making most of our deliveries now by truck instead of plane, and a pretty strong cut into our delivery time and fees.

Lighter, Stronger, more Breathable, still Grippy as hell, that’s all the features of the TOKAY Flights that will make you forget you’re wearing cleats to concentrate only on your game. Discover more at TOKAY-ULTIMATE.COM

[EUROSTARS] Building a team

The EUROSTARS stunned the Ultimate world with their results last year, bringing by far the Americus Cup to Europe. This results is even more astonishing when you realise how little time they had together to build a team. We sat with Bex, to talk about that.

What were the main milestones to build this team?

Putting together the team is broken into various parts: Scouting and selection is an in depth and lengthy process.
This is followed by the hefty tour logistics and the final component is the actual playing strategies that only happens when everyone is together on the tour.

How did you recruit the players?

There is an application process that begins with an open call. This is a very important aspect because reaching less connected but equally amazing players is at the root of the EuroStars mission. These types of players are less well known and hard to find but the impact on their playing career and their communities is bigger because of it.

Video footage is essential for the application process and players submit footage of two games, highlights reels are not accepted as they don’t provide enough accurate information. After the shortlist is announced an even more in depth scouting process continues with further video scouting (on non submitted video) references are contacted and opinion sought from elite players across europe and previous EuroStars. The final few team spots are always really difficult to fill because direct comparisons are difficult to make. A tryout would be much easier! Footage where players are marking known elite players is invaluable for this.

How did you build the team?

Once the selection is finalised the logistics take over. There is no playbook preparation before the tour because the subtle style and focus of each movement in strategy is vital and full team understanding is crucial as there is no time for the team to ‘work it out’. A crystal clear vision delivered with nuance is really important.

Because there is usually a large portion of the team I have never met before there are challenges in bringing out the best in players you are trying to get to know quickly. I have enjoyed this challenge of bringing in and pulling together strangers with multiple cultures and playing experiences and providing a professional experience that is unmatched particularly in Europe.
On the first jetlagged night we have a meeting, we meet each other, set out expectations, logistics and professionalism. THe next day is our first practice and here we focus on offense. The team is divided into 2 but in the first day combinations are moved around quickly to assess compatibility of natural playing styles. A lot of trust is required from players you have just met.
A system of plays and an overall playing style is introduced and enforced in a way that hopefully promotes clean offence without stifling players. This is usually a work in progress through the entire tour. What is clear is the vision. The style of play and the mechanism that players are expected to perform in. What is different about this team is the expectation of mental concentration. It is extremely high. There is no time for lapses. The players themselves are highly motivated players so this isn’t an issue normally but it can be challenging. It is an entire Season squashed into 2.5 weeks. Added challenges are that players are outside their normal playing position, english may not be their mother tongue, it’s hot, jet lagged is a factor and players maybe homesick.
Each game there is a very specific game plan and the training before each game we often introduce a new strategy that will be executed that night. This fast and specific turnaround is something that I know the players were surprised by, challenged by and ultimately enjoyed (I think)

Can you tease us a bit about the plans for next year?

EuroStars is just beginning to start preparations for 2020. It will look similar to previous cycles with a tour in mid to late August. Perhaps the last time in this format. Stay tuned on @eurostarstour.com insta, facebook et twitter and www.eurostarstour.com for further announcements.
